Fortunately, there is ONEXONE and the worthy organizations it supports. They see a world where the hungry are fed, the sick are treated, and the vulnerable are protected. They believe in preventing the preventable, fixing the fixable. We’re grateful for all that they do.
But the impact of their initiatives extends well beyond the children and communities they serve. Their mission offers each and every one of us an inspirational message.
Just as it’s been said that “if you want to build a boat, teach people to long for the endless immensity of the sea,” we can now say that if you want to build a better world teach people to long for the end to unnecessary suffering.
I want to thank all those involved in this endeavour: the sponsors, supporters and all those volunteers who’ve shown why generosity is one of the greatest acts of kindness. I also want to recognize those behind the genesis of this generosity, with a special mention to the Adler and Rogers families.
I’m honoured to be associated with ONEXONE and to have served as your Chair for the 2008 gala events. This is truly a special organization, one that ensures we live each day with a greater hope for tomorrow.

It was Robert F. Kennedy who said, “It is from numberless diverse acts of courage and belief that human history is shaped. Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope.”
We at ONEXONE believe “Hope Belongs to Everyone”.
I’ve traveled to Africa several times now and my life has been forever changed by the experiences I’ve had and the people I’ve met there. I saw tragedy and desperation everywhere I visited, but more than anything, I saw hope. It was truly inspiring. Now that we have programs on the ground in many of these areas and others, I’m continually encouraged and my optimism is renewed by the progress we’re making.
And while our resistance is strong, poverty continues to wage a brutal attack on many of the world’s youth. But this is a war with many battles: hunger, disease, and clean water among them. And the fight is far from over. ONEXONE takes a practical hands-on approach to solving these problems. And make no mistake; these problems can actually be solved within our lifetime. But to do so, we need to work together.
We are in the throes of the most uncertain economic times in more than half a century so making a charitable donation can be a challenge. But we can bring about change a dollar at a time. Some might write a big check, but others might pay with sweat equity and pocket change. Progress is made in both small steps and great strides. It takes only $1.50 to feed a child a school meal for a day; just $25 to give someone clean water for life – yes, just $25 will change someone’s future forever. Do what you can. But what’s important is that you get involved: Be heard. Be counted. Be part of the solution.
It is an opportunity to be a part of something big: Something bigger than yourself or any one of us alone. This is the stuff history is made of. We are the people who can change the future.
Apathy is easy. Change is hard. But it’s possible. Take solace in that possibility that hope is not lost. That tomorrow’s history books can be rewritten. And they will tell the story of how we came together to stand up for our ideals, to act to improve the lots of others, and to strike out against injustice. How each of us set forth a tiny ripple that together created a tidal wave of hope.
Please join me in working with ONEXONE to help children in need both here at home and around the world, because “Hope Belongs to Everyone”.
